Keeping of pets

If a resident of an apartment building wants to get a dog or a cat, they must obtain approval from two thirds of the owners of apartments in the building. If you live in a building where Félagsbustaðir owns an apartment and you are obtaining approval for an animal, we ask that you first obtain approval from our tenant and we will then confirm the approval later.

Óski eigandi íbúðar í fjölbýli eftir að fá sér hund eða kött þarf hann að afla samþykkis 2/3 eigenda í stigaganginum fyrir dýrinu. Ekki er þó nóg að fá einungis undirskriftir frá eigendunum sjálfum heldur þarf að skrá dýrið hjá sveitarfélagi og afhenda húsfélagi staðfestingu þar að lútandi. Ákvörðun um samþykki dýrahalds þarf svo að fara fram á húsfundi. Í strangasta skilningi þarf í kjölfarið að þinglýsa samþykki frá húsfundi á íbúðina sem dýrið býr í til að leyfi haldist gagnvart framtíðareigendum, sé íbúð í stigaganginum seld. Athugið að afla þarf samþykkis fyrir hverju dýri sem fengið er inn á heimilið.

In apartment buildings where Félagsbústaðir own sole apartments, we request that approval be sought from Félagsbústadir's tenant first for animals in the building. If the tenant of the apartment agrees to the animal, Félagsbústaðir will confirm the approval formally.

When there is neither a shared entrance nor a shared staircase, the consent of other owners is not required for the keeping dogs and cats in the building. This applies, for example, when there is a separate entrance to an apartment on the ground floor or from common outside steps. When the common staircase is on the outside and apartments are entered from the balcony, the consent of the owners to whom it belongs is required. However, it is necessary that before an animal comes into the house, the housing association is notified in writing about the animal and therefore that a photocopy of the permit from the relevant municipality is provided where appropriate.

Félagsbústaðir permit the keeping of animals in the company's apartments, but our tenants must, of course, obtain approval from their neighbors for each animal.

It is important to note that dogs should never be of the leash in common areas of apartment buildings, and must always be on a leash and under the supervision of the owner when entering and leaving the apartment. A prerequisite for the keeping dogs and cats is to take good care of the animal and ensure that the animal does not cause disturbance or inconvenience to other residents. In most apartment buildings animals are allowed to visit, even though keeping animals may be prohibited in the building.

We draw your attention to the fact that assistance animals are exempt from the above.
